The rainbow-colored Central Fountain was built in 1970 under the administration of former City Magistrate Dr. Xu Shi-Xian (許世賢). In the center of the fountain is a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, and the water dance is programmed with 14 shows. The water show runs in a cycle every 15 minutes, and the highest water beam shoots as high as 20 meters. At night, neon lights accompany the dancing water to bring the city dazzling shows everyday.
The Central Fountain has also become popular gathering place during political elections. Especially on the day before voting, many nominees picked this place to gather because this fountain has become the most characteristic site of the city, as well as a spiritual landmark.
