Ancient cannons shrouded in mystery~
The twelve ancient cannons were moved to their current location in 1975 AD. The inscription on one of the cannons clearly read: “Forged in fall, 12th Year of the Jiaqing Era, at the orders of Commandant of Min-Zhe Headquarters and Fujian Inspector-General and Fujian. The cannon was cast for the Left Wing of the Taisie Navy. Each cannon weighs 1,000 jing.”
There are no records on the origins of the ancient cannons. They may have something to do with De-lu Wang, a provincial navy commander born in Chiayi. Alternatively, the cannons may have originally been mounted on the east, south and northwest city gatehouses.
Construction: Cast in the 12th Year of Jiaqing Era, Manchu Period (1807 AD).
