One of the key battles of the Nationalist Government after its withdrawal to China
A war monument commemorating all officers and men that fought!
Yijiangshan is a small island off the coast of Zhejiang. When the Nationalist Government withdrew to Taiwan in 1949, the strategy at the time was to retain control of Kinmen, Mazu, as well as Dacheng Island and Yijiangshan off the coast of Zhejiang in order to retake the Mainland one day. On January 18, 1955, the Chinese Communist forces launched a massive attack on Yijiangshan. The battle lasted for more than sixty hours until the garrison commander chose to commit suicide by a hand grenade. None of the garrison survived the bitterly fought battle.
