◎G9 Creative Park (Disused Chiayi Distillery)

The Disused Chiayi Distillery aside Chiayi Train Station was established in 1916.  As the earliest Kaoliang distillery in Taiwan, it was called Hometown of Spirit.  The distillery moved to Minsyong Industrial Park in 1982.  The disused distillery is completely reserved.  The pilot plant, the boiler room, the hardware warehouse, the compounded spirits plant, the Koji making plant, the packing plant, the mechanical repair and woodwork room are reserved as they used to be.  They are listed as the historic architecture as well.  After all, the disused distillery is genuinely the key cultural asset of the Taiwan’s distillery industry.

◎Kitamon Eki (Japan-style Wood-frame Train Station)

The Alishan Forest was found by the Japanese in 1899 during the Japanese Governance Period.  The 80-year logging plan was able to be done out of the ample reserves, so the Alishan railway was set up.  The timber of prime Taiwan red cypress and Taiwan cypress logged was shipped to Japan and the flats in Taiwan to build the shrines and was supplied to shipbuilding in Kanto, Kansai and Kyushu of Japan as well.  The destination was Beimen (North Gate, Kitamon in Japanese), Chiayi.  Eki means the train station in Japanese, so this wood frame train station is called Kitamon Eki.  This station was built nearly 100 years ago.  As one of the 3 existing Japan-style wood frame train stations of the Alishan Forest Railway, it is pretty precious.

◎Hinoki (Cypress) Village

The Alishan Forest Railway starts at Beimen of Chiayi, so Chiayi City becomes the entrance of Alishan (Mt. Ali).  In the early days, cypress logged in the Alishan Forest used to be collected in Chiayi City and this made the wood vendors and lumbering factories nearby Kitamon Eki thrive.  This contributed to the prosperity as well as the commercial development in the neighborhood at that time.  Hinoki (cypress) as the sole building material was used to build the Japanese dormitories back then.  This as a major feature of the Japan-style buildings has witness the forestry development in Alishan.  Hinoki Village is built for revival of the Japanese dormitories.  The village is grouped into 6 theme zones including Forestry Museum, Agricultural Selection Shop (shopping mall), Specialty Stores, Hinoki-cho Harajuku (wood frame architecture), Woodcarving, Art & Culture.  The visitors can not only learn about the forestry history but also experience the aesthetics of fancy woodcraft to spread the Alishan forestry culture.

 

◎Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park

The Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park is a mega train museum.  The visitors can access several disused steam trains, diesel locomotives, diesel rail cars, carriages and cars, and the round turntable to alter the direction of the locomotive engine directly in person.  This is a must visit venue for the railway fans.

◎Powerhouse Woodcarving Exhibition Hall

The venue used to be the earliest thermal power plant run in Chiayi City as well as the first steel reinforced concrete (SRC) building in Chiayi City.  The project was finished in 1913.  The latest architectural technology in the early days of Taiwan applied to the project.  It pertains to one elevated large-span building rarely seen back then.  Currently, this historic architecture reused is a woodcarving exhibition venue via renovation.

◎Forest Song

Forest Song is the new landmark of the Forestry Gallery of Chiayi City.  It is made by employing the log, rail tracks, yellow rattan and rocks supplied by the Forestry Bureau.  The aim is to reproduce the prosperity of Chiayi the logging town.  The design image adopts the erecting sacred red cypress and the Alishan rail tracks.  This mimics a calm spiritual tower.  The log strips surround the main body like the giant sacred red cypress rooted to the ground but erecting to the sky to embrace the clouds.  The tower formed by a lot of tied cut log stacked recollects the thriving forestry in Chiayi.  The dome knitted by copper invites the public to view the sun and the moon along with the clouds in the sky through the bores.  The aisle knitted by rattan leads the visitors to the main body as if visiting a cave.  The bottom with the steel racks blended in the rock cage mimicking the ecology tied tightly with the range, wood and soil tells the flat forest the unique setting.

◎Chiayi Municipal Museum

This is a multifunctional comprehensive museum.  The main building is with one basement and three stories.

Floor 1: Geology Hall, Exhibition Zone

Floor 3: Art Hall, Chen Cheng-po Memorial Zone, Chiayi Art Space

The exhibition contents cover Chiayi’s three themes: Geology, Fossil and Art.  Geology Hall probes how the Tropic of Cancer is scientifically defined and how it is changed and drifted and introduces the related range and earthquakes.  Fossil Hall mainly exhibits the fossils of creatures discovered in Chiayi.  Art Hall is with Painter Chen Cheng-po Memorial Zone besides some contemporary art theme exhibitions.  This completely presents the cultural features consisting of the local landscapes and art & culture.

◎Chiayi City Koji Pottery Museum

Chiayi City is home of Koji pottery.  Japan used to call it Chiayi-yaki (Chiayi ceramics).  There are six exhibition zones and art walls, kids creation zone and pottery classroom.  It not only reveals the origin, decorative occasions and conventional themes fully but also conveys Koji pottery’s aesthetics of molding, glazes and themes amply.

◎Prison Museum (Disused Chiayi Prison)

The venue with the penitentiary complex reserved completely is planned as the Prison Museum by the Ministry of Justice currently.  It is worthy of studies on the developmental history of single model buildings.  In particular, the radial fan shape applied to the ward configuration.  This is the only Pennsylvania system architecture reserved at the original construction venue in the world.  This design not only is meant for escape-proof and easy administration but also meets the demands including ventilation, lighting, humidity-proof and air patrol.  The looks of the ward, the control center and the administrative zone remain how they used to be.  The Alishan cypress used to be the main building material of doors, windows and wallboards.  The construction profession securing sturdiness, durability and escape-proof was the most valued.  This is why the venue is so precious in terms of the Taiwan’s prison history and architecture.

◎Wenhua Rd., Night Market

The Wehuan Rd. Night Market is in the center of Chiayi City.  There are all sorts of vendors and stalls such as sliced chicken on hot rice, fish head hot pot, Hakka radish cake in broth, minced pork on rice steamed [salted rice pudding], eel noodles and hot and cold tofu pudding in syrup and also many famous souvenirs and gourmets in Chiayi in the neighborhood.  This is the most thriving and crowded street as well as the important shopping zone in Chiayi.  This night market was nominated in the Tourism Bureau MOTC Top 10 Local Nigh Markets in 2010.  The colorful water of the central fountain welcomes the visitors in addition to shopping and savoring.  The visitors can take a break at Wenhua Park with a rich touch of art and culture.

【Chiayi Tower】

This is the new landmark that can symbolize Chiayi City the most.  A giant Hong Kong orchid tree in Chiayi Park is visible to the public with the blue sky as the best background.  It is the municipal flower of Chiayi City that shows how fancy it is as it spreads through Chiayi Tower’s illumination.

Hsingchia Suspension Bridge

This is a suspension bridge linking Hsing-an and Hsingtsun Villages in East District of Chiayi City for the pupils and residents on 2 sides to commute easily that was built solely with fund and labor provided by the Homingteh Charity Group that is famous nationwide in 2007.

Chiayu Bikeway

 This is a bikeway built on the idled CPC rail tracks.  The full length is 3,500 meters from the start at CPC plant on Sec. 4, Shixian Rd., West Dist., Chiayi City, via Meiyuan, Kuanglu and Hunei Village, West Dist. and Sanhe, Sialiao and Hueiguei Villages, Shueishang Township, Chiayi County and to the Tropic of Cancer Station Astronomy Square.  It is planned as the bikeway and scenery green corridor for advancing the leisure and tourism resources in Chiayi City.

Chiayi Botanicalal Garden (living collections)

The venue used to be a botanic garden set up in 1908 Year 41 of Meiji.  The area is around 8.6 hectares.  It is on the northeast side of Chiayi Park.  As a rubber seedling production and experiment spot, it turned to be a tropical economic botanic plantation test zone.  It used to be a tropical economic botanic plantation test spot.  Later, it is run as a botanic garden supplying seedlings.  Now, it is affiliated to the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute.  There are 140 species affiliated to 47 families and 107 genera in the garden.  They pertain to the plants with the cultural features to be narrated like famous mahogany, hoop pine, green maple and rubber tree.  The trees erect still after 100 years.  The tranquil feel of the forest is brought to the public by the plain nature.  It is indeed a key urban leisure spot in Chiayi City.

Chiayi City Jiu Huan Shan Di Cang An

Jiu Huan Shan Di Cang An used to be named Chiayi Bei Yue Dian Di Cang Wang - Jiu Hua Shan Di Cang An.  The Buddhist statue (bodhisattva figure) was shielded and guarded by one of the benevolent persons to Taiwan in the late years of Ming Dynasty.  In 1697 Year 36 of Kangxi, the present venue was chosen to worship the statue.  It happened over 3 centuries ago.  In 1717 Year 56 of Kangxi, the temple was built by General Chung-kung Yu of Beilu Camp.  In 1760 Year 25 of Qianlong, it was broadened by Magistrate Tang Lee.  The temple gained its scale at this point.  It has been renovated over time and was rebuilt as a 7-story lotus temple in 1971.

Chiayi City Chenghuang (God of Town) Temple

Chenghuang is called Deity Chenghuang symbolizing God of Town.  Chenghuang Temple as the religious core of Chiayi residents has been close to the mass with the flourishing pilgrims in the ancient times.  The temple was finished in 1715 Year 54 of Kangxi.  It got makeover in 1732 Year 10 of Yongzheng.  In 1764 Year 29 of Qianlong, Suo-so Chang the new mayor (magistrate) renovated the temple owing to the severe damaged body slanting prone to collapse.  Ching-mu Wang the carpentry maestro of Chuanzhou Xidi School was in charge of reconstruction of existing Chenghuang Temple.  Woodwork with magnificence and the regal layout is an artwork.  Joggling applied to the eight-trigram wood-frame ceiling of the worship hall, the decorative corridor of the main hall, and the Kang-chia brackets of the side hall. No hardware of single nail and metal piece was used.  The craftsmanship is outstanding.  11 historic inscribed monuments and wood boards in the dynasty of Qing were are reserved.  They are very valuable.   The items include 11 pieces as follows: Tai Yang Sian You the only wood board among Chenghuang Temples in Taiwan granted by Emperor of Qing; Tau Hung Hua Yu the wood board contributed by De-lu Wang the prince mentor; Chenghuang Temple Reconstruction the monument set up by Magistrate Suo-so Chang; the monument set up by Magistrate Xue-heng Fang for incense lamp fundraising; the giant abacus contributed by Tau-nan Kung from Jinjiang; the monument set up by Magistrate Ting-gan Wang for the mourning hall construction; He Sheng Chuo Ling the wood board contributed by Feng-tsau Su the tutor; and Expel the Evil and Guard the Good the wood board contributed by Senior Overall Officer Kao-yuan Chang of Taipeng (Taiwan & Penghu) Base to be resigned leading General Li-de Chou.

Lan Pond Dam Scenic Area

Located at the eastern part of Chiayi City, the bottom can be seen since the water is so clear.  The pond-surrounding hills reflecting on the surface form a nice scene.  The moonlight renders a poetic feel to it.  This is why Lan Pond Dam Moonlight becomes one of Chiayi 8 Scenes / Landscapes.  There is an observatory aside Lan Pond Dam surrounded by the road, so the panoramic Lan Pond Dam is available from the top.  Moon Shade in Pond is aside the Moon Square of Lan Pond Dam.  The artwork is a main body with a hollow-out structure knitted by aluminum flakes.  The wildlife feel fills the air as the piece under the moonlight mimics the bird nest built on the water with the flock of birds on the trees as the background.  Moon Shade in Pond with Moon Shade as the scenery and Pond as the waves conveys the Lan Pond Dam image comprised of Moon, Water and Pond in terms of tourism.  The ceramic bottom drop symbolizes the never-ending Lan Pond Dam water source with a fantastic mood.  In the middle, the upper half of the nest resembling the peach implies Town of Peach the old name of Chiayi City.  On the side, the tree nest erecting as a turkey’s tail signifies turkey rice the local specialty.  The style covers the cultural and tourism features of Chiayi City.

National Chiayi University Insect Museum

A translucent dome is on the roof of the museum.  The 24/7 butterfly-watching space is available in the museum.  A semispherical glass greenhouse was built for that.  The butterflies newly emerged are released from the breeding room each day. 

This keeps a constant peak of the butterfly aggregate in the greenhouse.  The visitors can access a brand-new exhibition style in the setting.  This is a must-visit venue.

The museum is with 6 professional exhibition zones: Taiwan (local) examples zone, models of conversation insects exhibition zone, aquatic insects exhibition zone, resource insects exhibition zones, world (global) examples zone, and world (global) rare living insects exhibition zone.  There are one unprecedented rotating colorful butterfly pillar and one giant butterfly greenhouse.  This is a specific museum.

 The dome greenhouse exhibits the botanic clusters mimicking the original forest and creeks.  There are theme landscapes around the dome greenhouse including the living collections of endemic trees in Taiwan, the Hengchun / Lanyu (Orchid Island) plants zone and the ecological pool’s hydrophytes zone and xerophytes zone.  There is a waterfall plants zone resembling the rock mountain in the greenhouse.  A waterfall flows from the rock 8 meters high.  The waterfall’s moist supplies the humid setting essential to orchids and ferns on the rock wall.  This forms a natural ecology.
