Chiayi City was developed in earlier time, and the Dutch left some historic relics, such as" red-hair well" and" red-hair pond " etc. In the time of Cheng in the Ming Dynasty, there were camp towns set up in the settled field, and the settlements were gradually formed. In the Japanese colony time (1895), A department governing Chianyi County was set up in Chiayi
City , and it started prosperity.
In 1945 Taiwan was recovered from Japan occupation, Chiayi City was set as a city under control of provincial government. In 1950, Chiayi was demoted as a city under control of county government.
In 1982, it resumed the city status under control of provincial government.
